Bitcoin Rally Gains Momentum as U.S. Treasury Doubles Debt Buybacks and Boosts Market Liquidity

Elena Smith August 19, 2026

Bitcoin is gaining momentum after the U.S. Treasury announced plans to double the size of selected long-term debt buybacks. The move could improve market liquidity and support risk assets, giving BTC price a fresh bullish catalyst. Traders are now watching whether Bitcoin can sustain its momentum above key resistance levels as broader liquidity and U.S. macroeconomic conditions remain in focus.

Bitcoin Rally Gains Momentum as U.S. Treasury Doubles Debt Buybacks and Boosts Market Liquidity

Bitcoin staged a sharp recovery on Wednesday as financial markets reacted to the U.S. Treasury’s decision to significantly increase its long-term debt buyback operations. The move strengthened expectations of improved market liquidity and helped push Bitcoin price toward the $70,000 level.

The U.S. Treasury announced that it will increase the size of selected buyback operations for longer-dated Treasury securities from a current maximum of $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. The larger operations are scheduled to begin on September 9 and continue through November 4, 2026.

Bitcoin Price Rallies as Treasury Boosts Liquidity

The announcement immediately attracted attention across global financial markets. Bitcoin climbed sharply during the session, reaching its highest levels since early June as traders interpreted the Treasury action as a potential improvement in broader financial conditions.

The Bitcoin rally also came as long-term U.S. Treasury yields pulled back from elevated levels. The 30-year Treasury yield had recently climbed to around 5.34%, its highest level in roughly 19 years, before reversing lower following the Treasury announcement.

For cryptocurrency investors, falling bond yields and improved liquidity can be important because they may encourage investors to increase exposure to higher-risk assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies.

Why the U.S. Treasury Buyback Matters

Treasury buybacks are designed to improve liquidity in older or less actively traded government securities. By purchasing longer-term debt, the Treasury can help provide additional demand in parts of the bond market that have recently experienced heavy selling pressure.

The latest plan specifically targets Treasury securities with maturities ranging from 10 to 30 years. The Treasury said the increase is intended to provide greater liquidity support in longer-dated markets.

The announcement does not represent direct stimulus for Bitcoin. Instead, its potential impact comes through financial-market conditions. If long-term yields stabilize and liquidity improves, investors may become more comfortable taking positions in risk assets.

Bitcoin and Crypto Market Sentiment Improve

Bitcoin's reaction highlights how closely BTC price is increasingly connected to macroeconomic developments. The cryptocurrency has been sensitive to U.S. interest rates, Treasury yields, Federal Reserve expectations and global liquidity throughout 2026.

The latest Treasury announcement therefore gave Bitcoin bulls a fresh catalyst after the cryptocurrency had spent much of the recent period trading under pressure.

Market participants are now watching whether Bitcoin can maintain momentum above the $68,000-$70,000 resistance zone. A sustained move above $70,000 could improve the technical outlook and potentially attract additional momentum traders.

However, volatility remains high. Treasury buybacks alone do not eliminate concerns surrounding U.S. government debt, inflation, Federal Reserve policy or geopolitical risks.

What Comes Next for Bitcoin?

The next phase of the Bitcoin price forecast will likely depend on whether the improvement in liquidity translates into sustained demand for cryptocurrencies.

Investors will also focus on upcoming U.S. economic data and Federal Reserve signals for clues about the future path of interest rates. Lower yields combined with stronger liquidity could create a supportive environment for Bitcoin, while renewed pressure on bond yields could quickly reverse the current risk-on sentiment.

For now, the Treasury's expanded buyback program has provided a fresh macro catalyst for the crypto market, with Bitcoin leading the broader rebound.
